Your Quarterly dose of Enterprise.

by on Mar.30, 2012, under Movie Design, Star Trek

Hey all… I’ve been neglecting the blog for a while, so I figured it was time to put up something… so here it is… enjoy.  I brought the old girl out of mothballs and lit her up… (for another project that I’ll tell you all about sometime… )… and before you all go “DIRECTOR’S EDITION HD????” … um… no.  Unfortunately.  I was thinking about being cruel and posting that work had commenced on the DE:HD.  But I would have had to post it on Sunday, if you know what I mean.  Anyway… here you go. Share and enjoy.  Click on it.  The picture is huge.

30 years and a jillion dollars later, and nothing J.J. cranked out could top that pretty lady. The Queen of Outer Space! (Take THAT, Zsa-Zsa!)

Beautiful rendering, my friend,… thank you.

I got shivers, literal shivers, looking at this. Excited to hear about what project could use her.

Lovely, Daren. If you were given the green-light for the blu-ray, would you use all the same assets? Or would you re-do any of the models for HD? (Unbelievable that the DE is over ten years old!)

Would certainly try… it all depends on what is still usable and readable by the available versions of the software… and to determine what would be needed to re-create the assets if need be… I’d actually like to use the new version of the Enterprise model that I’ve been building… just because shaders and modeling techniques have been improved… and are able to create much more realistic and subtle effects… but I would try and use everything that was generated for the original project that we could.

I would give all of the money for the DE on Blu-ray. I was sad when I saw the release party for the 3-disc TMP soundtrack was going to show “THE MOTION PICTURE” on the big screen (the DVD of the Director’s Edition).

Because taking a 480p image and blowing it up to 52′ wide is not the way to honor the hard work done on it over the years.

Daren, have you heard about the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Soundtrack Celebration that’s going to happen on June 4th? It’s a pretty big gathering of talent from folks involved with the film both when it was originally made to the development of the Director’s Edition.

    Bruce Botnick, Goldsmith recording engineer
Craig Huxley, Synthesizer and Blaster Beam performer
David Newman, Session Violinist and renowned composer
Mike Matessino, Director’s Edition restoration supervisor
    RIchard Kraft, Jerry Goldsmith’s agent
Richard H. Kline, director of cinematography
    Mark Mangini, Sound Editor

Haven’t seen a gathering like this for Star Trek: The Motion Picture since, well, the Director’s Edition release. Even the fine folks at filmscoremonthly and La-La Land Records hope that this will create more positive buzz to get the High Def release of the Director’s Edition off the ground. Here is the website for the event.

Nice Enterprise. Any chance it will be on the next TV show or Movie.
