Two Posts in Two days???? (updated)
by DarenDoc on Feb.25, 2010, under Movie Design
I’ve been spending this week going through old projects, hence the batmobile yesterday, and today’s entry: The Proteus from “Fantastic Voyage”… I started this 3d model back in 2000, and have basically rebuilt it over the past couple of days…. it still has a lot to go, but I think it’s coming along nicely…
UPDATE:
I thought I would come up with a quick little environment and see how it was working… the darn frame took 3 hours just to render.

Ah, the Proteus, another beautiful Harper Goff design. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore, do they?
Nice job on the 3D model, Daren.

No, Michael… unfortunately they don’t. Goff was sure a maestro of this kinda thing… creating iconic designs for this, of course, the Nautilus, and the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He was also one of the key designers of Disneyland. I don’t know if he would have liked the current trend of treating designers like plumbers, all interchangeable, in the current industry.
Truly a melding of form and function. One of my favorites. Thanks for the compliment… It will be fun to get this one finished.

They don’t make them like Raquel Welch any more, either… I’d like to see a 3-d turnaround of her!
